The Supreme Court agreed Monday to hear a case that could significantly narrow the discretion federal agencies have historically been given to interpret ambiguous statutory language.
The case stems from a dispute over a regulatory agency’s expansion of its own authority into an area business groups argue Congress never explicitly authorized.
“This is the kind of case that ends up reshaping how every agency in Washington operates, not just the one being sued,” one legal scholar said.
A ruling is not expected before the court’s next term concludes, meaning the underlying regulation will likely remain in effect throughout the litigation.
