Committee Hearings Resume on Federal Procurement Contract Overruns

Auditors flagged cost overruns exceeding original estimates on several major technology contracts.

A parliamentary committee resumed hearings this week into a string of federal technology procurement contracts that ran substantially over their original budgeted cost.

An earlier audit found that in several cases, the final contract value exceeded the original estimate by more than double, with limited documentation explaining the scope changes.

“Taxpayers deserve to know why the numbers moved this much and who signed off at each stage,” the committee chair said in opening remarks.

Department officials testified that evolving security requirements accounted for a significant share of the additional cost, though committee members pressed for more detailed breakdowns.

Further testimony from outside contractors is scheduled for the coming weeks.
