A bipartisan coalition of governors sent a joint letter to federal agencies this week arguing that unfunded regulatory mandates now cost their states a combined total exceeding ten billion dollars a year.
The letter singles out reporting requirements attached to federal grants as a particular source of administrative cost that state budgets were never compensated for.
“This isn’t a partisan complaint. Red states and blue states are both writing the same checks,” one governor said at a joint press conference.
Federal officials have acknowledged the letter and said a review of reporting requirements is already underway as part of a broader efficiency initiative.
