A handful of government backbench MPs representing rural ridings have publicly broken with their party’s line on how carbon levy rebates are calculated, arguing the current formula shortchanges constituents with fewer public transit options.
The rebate formula, which uses a flat provincial rate with a rural top-up, has faced criticism since its introduction for not fully accounting for the higher heating and transportation costs rural households face.
“I support the underlying policy. I don’t support ignoring the math for my constituents,” one of the MPs said in a statement.
A government spokesperson said the formula is reviewed annually and that feedback from caucus members is part of that process.
